Forsaken By Shadow (A Paranormal Romance of the Mirus)

Title: Forsaken By Shadow

Can he relearn the Shadow Walker skills he learned from her father? If they survive, will Embry be able to walk away again?

My Review
This book is an instant attention grabber that pulls you in from the very first page and never lets you go. It has mystery, suspense, danger, violence, romance, and fun all wrapped in an action packed little package.

Gage aka Cade is a human turned Shadow Walker, the only problem is that he can't remember who he once was or who he once loved. He starts a new life as a UFC fighter, but he is left with a gaping hole that he wants filled - who is he and where did he come from? More importantly, who is she? The faceless girl in his mind that makes his heart ache.

In walks Embry, the one who holds the key to Gage's past and his heart.  Instantly drawn to her as she sits in the crowd, he seeks her out, but what she has planned for him isn't what he expected. Her father has been taken and she needs Gage's help to get him back. He is finally given back is past,  while heading toward a new and dangerous future.

Will there love for each other surpass the danger they are in or will it tear them apart? Can he remember his training as a Shadow Walker in time to save her father, or are they walking into a suicide mission?

Once I started, I could not put this book down. Forsaken by Shadow is fresh, well-written and an absolute must read. You will be on the edge of your seat trying to keep up with this fast paced paranormal romance that will leave you breathless!

This book is rated 4 1/2 fangs:

Did you read Forsaken by Shadow? What did you think? Are you racing to put this in your TBR pile?

Let's hear your thoughts!

Q&A with author Kait Nolan

Paromantasy would like to shine the spotlight on author Kait Nolan. Kait's novel, Forsaken By Shadow , is a paranormal romance that was released earlier this year. I have read the book all I can say is - Wow. Read my review above. This book is filled with twists and turns, love and danger, mystery and suspense ! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down!

Kait was kind enough to do a Q&;A with Paromantasy about her book, her life, and what it means to be an author.

Let's give a warm welcome to Kait Nolan!

Tell us about yourself.
I am a self-professed paranormal romance addict with a book collection that could, if laid end to end, circle my house about five times. I’ve got a Master’s degree in clinical psychology and spend my days juggling research and teaching at the local university. My lunches, nights, and spare five minutes here and there are devoted to spinning tales of paranormal worlds to take you out of Real Life—and creating creatures that could eat my boss. Hey, don’t judge; it’s therapy in its own way.

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?
I was 12, and I’d just met my childhood best friend. God knows why, but after our first day of hanging out, we decided to write a book—featuring us as the main characters, of course. As time passed, the book got rewritten each year, the characters aging. And I was the one who always did the updating. I guess at that point I was hooked. Enough so that I submitted my first proper novel for publication when I was 15. That one, thank God, never saw the light of day.

Where did you get the idea for Forsaken by Shadow from?
I can’t remember now, which came first—the idea for the Shadow Walkers or the set up of somebody waking up with no memory. It all kind of runs together in my head. But I guess the root of it was that I’m a sucker for paranormal stories where one of the couple is human and one’s not. The world I’ve created for this story (and all to follow) is one in which humans simply can’t know that the paranormal world exists. That’s the prime directive handed down by the Council of Races (the paranormal government). Humans with that knowledge are supposed to be executed. But I kept wondering what if someone wasn’t executed. What if their memory was wiped. And what if somebody needed to come back and unwipe it down the line… That’s kind of the seed I was working from.

Are your characters based on people you know?
Less on people I know in person and more loosely off of other fictional characters I’ve seen on TV or in movies or in other books. Gage, for example, is kind of loosely based on Elliott from Leverage. They had this great episode where he infiltrates an MMA fight club, and that was where the inspiration for what Gage has been DOING since he lost his memory came from.

Did you do much research for your book?
I watched a LOT of MMA (mixed martial arts) and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Champion) fights on YouTube as research for the fighting style. I’ve got some background in martial arts, and my husband has an eighth degree black belt, so I definitely had some knowledge of fighting to begin with, but there’s no substitute for watching it in terms of being able to describe it fluidly. I’m also a big fan of Fight Science and Deadliest Warrior.

Would you rather be: A Shadow Walker like Gage or a Fire Caster born of an Elemental like Embry?
Firecaster, definitely. Embry totally grew out of my lifelong wish that I could throw fire. I have no idea where this desire comes from. Maybe because as a child I looked exactly like Drew Barrymore from Firestarter. Maybe because I can be a real hothead. I’ve just always thought that would be really cool.

Who are some of your favorite authors and why?
Love love love Nalini Singh. She writes exactly the kind of paranormal romance I like, and her prose is gorgeous to boot. I’m also addicted to J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, which is its own strange form of crack (I keep coming back even though she does things that I hate). And I can’t get enough of Cassandra Clare—The Mortal Instruments trilogy blew my mind earlier this year and left me dying for more.

What books are you reading now?
At the moment I’m reading I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore, which is really kind of fascinating. I’m also in the middle of Jeri Smith-Ready’sShade in audio.

Are you working on any other projects we should watch out for?
Absolutely! Just now I am winding up Devil’s Eye, another short novella I hope to have released in December. It’s going to be a freebie (well everywhere but Amazon because I can’t list it free there), available in multiple formats. The story follows Mick Guidry, the wolf-shifter bartender from Forsaken By Shadow, and his lady, demi-goddess Sophie Hayden. It’s kind of a mix of Indiana Jones, a zombie flick, and Romancing the Stone. You know, with a demon thrown in for fun.

And once that’s off my plate, I’m diving headfirst into an unrelated paranormal YA that’s based on the Red Riding Hood mythos. Red takes a familiar story and turns it entirely on its ear in a way that’ll make sure you never think of Red Riding Hood in the same way again. I expect to have it ready to release in late Spring of 2011.

What made you go the Self Publishing route?
It started out as a plan to get my name out there and begin building a readership and a platform. These days nobody gets published without it (well hardly). As things moved along, publishing went to the Agency model for the Big 5, and publishers and agents were telling their authors, “Don’t quit your day job.” Since the whole point is to eventually be able to quit my day jobs, that kind of soured me on going the traditional route. Plus, with everything I juggle, it would be difficult for me to deal with New York deadlines just now. This way might be slower, but I think that eventually I will earn enough through the passive income stream of my books to say adios to my boss and write full time.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book or publishing experience?
It’s all been so positive, I can’t think of anything I’d change. Lots of folks have said they thought FBS should have been a full length novel or was trying to be. It wasn’t. I never intended to expand it that far. It’s an introduction to my world, so it’s supposed to leave you with lots of questions. That’s the whole point—to suck you in to my series. :D

What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not reading or writing, I’m hanging out in my kitchen, concocting recipes for my food blog, Pots and Plots. And these days I’m mired in home improvement projects we get ready to sell our house next summer.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Never underestimate the power of a good crit partner. I absolutely cannot do without mine, Susan Bischoff. We fully admit we’re kind of co-dependent. I was lucky enough to stumble into a relationship with mine. For those who aren’t so fortunate, I started Crit Partner Match.

Tell the readers what to expect from Forsaken by Shadow.
They should expect a fast, action-packed ride with a new paranormal mythology and sizzling romance that’ll leave them wanting more (I hope!).

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I suppose the biggest thing I’d like to say is thank you. For indie authors there’s no support from a publisher, no advance, no marketing campaign. We survive by the goodwill and kindness of readers for deciding to take a chance on us and telling their friends. I appreciate each and every one of you!

Kait is a great author and person who is fun, kind and down to earth. Her novel, Forsaken by Shadow,  is a thrill ride of a read that will grip you from the very first page and take you on a roller coaster ride all the way through the end. I can't wait to read more books from this uber talented writer.
If you have read her book, love the interview or just want to know more, leave a comment and we will get back to you!

Toil and Trouble Book Review

Toil and Trouble, a Paranormal Romance (Book 2 of the Jolie Wilkins Series)

Title: Toil and Trouble
Series: Jolie Wilkins, book 2
Author: HP Mallory

Official Synopsis

The Underworld in civil war.

The cause? A witch who can reanimate the dead.

A sexy as sin vampire determined to claim her.

An infuriatingly handsome warlock torn between duty and love.

Who says blonds have more fun?

After defending herself against fairy magic, Jolie Wilkins wakes to find her world turned upside down—the creatures of the Underworld on the precipice of war.

The Underworld is polarized in a battle of witch against witch, creature against creature, led by the villainous Bella, who would be Queen.

While Jolie has one goal in mind, to stake the vampire, Ryder, who nearly killed her, she also must choose between the affections of her warlock employer, Rand, and the mysteriously sexy vampire, Sinjin.
And as if that weren’t enough to ruin a girl’s day, everything Jolie knows will be turned inside out when she’s thrust into the shock of a lifetime.

Toil and Trouble is the second book in the Jolie Wilkins series, the follow up to Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

My Review
This is a heart-pumping, romance sizzling, tear jerking, mystery filled book that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, all while sitting (or in my case, jumping up and down) reading! In other words, Toil and Trouble is simply AMAZING! HP Mallory has done what many other authors have tried and failed to do: make a second book of a series that was unbelievable even better! Everything is amplified: the romance, the suspense, the action, and the love triangle between Jolie, Rand and Sinjin literally left me feeling like a ping pong ball, back and forth with still no clear favorite man since they are both great.

Now that my little tirade of verbal book bliss is over, let’s get into what this must-read book is all about! Jolie is a witch who can reanimate the dead and of course, anyone with that much power is going to have a huge target on their head. The underworld is now at the brink of a civil war with Jolie smack dab in the middle of it. Not to worry, she has a bunch of friends from Werewolves to Fae to help her, plus two of the hottest “guys” watching her back. There’s Sinjin, the sexy and mysterious bad boy vampire, and Rand, the incredibly hot warlock with a heart of gold to match, both willing to give their lives for her. As the action intensifies, so does the love triangle between these three. Jolie wants to take her relationship further with Rand, but he’s still holding back since love between a warlock and a witch is essentially a life bond that can lead to near death if your partner should die. He’s not willing to take that risk and she is tiring of the constant torture of loving someone and having all roads lead to nowhere. Then there’s Sinjin who wants nothing more than to go all the way with Jolie. He seems to love her, or at least lust for her, and she can’t deny the attraction, but can she trust him?

With war fast approaching, Jolie is preparing for the inevitable battle since she is a badass herself and wants her revenge on Ryder, the vamp who nearly killed her. Rand wants to keep her out of it, but nothing is going to deter her from seeking vengeance. Of course, nothing goes as plans and the readers are in for a bunch of twists and turns that will have you racing through the pages and leave your heart on the floor with a few curve balls thrown in and a jaw dropping ending.

This book is rated 5 Fangs!

As many of my readers know, HP Mallory is one of Paromantasy’s favorite authors and is on my “must-read list.” She did a Q&A with us last year, where I reviewed Fire Burn and Caulderon Bubble (book 1 of Jolie Wilkins series), and To Kill A Warklock. If you haven’t done so, put these books on you TBR list now!! They are awesome. All my Richelle Mead fans, I know we are sad that VA ended, but these books will pick your spirit right up. Yes, these books are that awesome!

HP - you're a rockstar! I can't wait for the next in the series, and the next Dulcie book.

Out Of The Ashes Book Review

Out Of The Ashes

Title: Out Of The Ashes
Author: Toni LoTempio

Official Synopsis
Afton Cooper can touch objects or dead people and get a sense of their lives – she’s also a phoenix. When Afton gets an ID bracelet sent to her that belonged to a rogue cop, she sees his murder at the hands of a succubus. Afton joins forces with Ian Perry, an Anime (Shapeshifter) to try and solve the mystery: Who’s behind the killings? What does “three of six” mean? Can Afton and Ian stop the dark forces at work before they succumb to their own passion?

My Review
One of Paromantasy’s favorite new found authors, Toni LoTempio, has stolen our fantasy loving hearts once again with the fast-paced, heart pumping action, romance, and mystery filled book titled “Out of the Ashes”. This unique mix of traditional and urban fantasy makes this an original, unique and refreshing read, and that’s saying a lot when talking about a genre that is becoming increasingly popular! Some may not like the two aspects of fantasy mix, but I enjoyed it and felt it was tied together in a way that made it work.
Afton is an actress with a side job as a Paranormal Forces Unit investigator. How would an actress get a job as a PFU investigator? By having special powers and when your powers include being a fire wielding Phoenix with the ability to see a person’s life with a single touch, then you pretty much earned your spot on the task force. Unlike most of us who would kill for that power, Afton just wants to be normal but when an ID bracelet is sent to her with the inscription “three of six,” her life takes a definite turn to fantasyville. Suddenly she finds herself undercover as an actress to solve a murder. As if things weren’t getting complicated enough, she has to join forces with a hot Anime to stop the murderer before it’s too late and soon finds herself pining for him. Putting their feelings aside, the recruit the help of her fairy bff and her human buddy Rick to solve this murder mystery before it’s too late, but what they really find is the truth behind Afton and her powers. Suddenly the stakes are higher than they thought, and it’s not just a murder of a few they have to be worried about, the end of the world as they know it is on their shoulders. Time is ticking, curves are thrown, romance is flying and we must see if Afton can make it Out of the Ashes!

This book is rated 4 Fangs!

I was gushing about Toni LoTempio and a fan and friend of this site asked me: "Which is your favorite book of the two that you read from Toni: No Rest For The Wicca or Out of the Ashes?" Well, they are both so different that it makes it a hard choice. In the end I choose No Rest For The Wicca because it’s just that amazing! It truly is one of the best books ever and that is hard to tops, BUT I think you should definitely go out and give Out of the Ashes a shot, especially if you love traditional fantasy novels. This one is definitely entertaining and has a killer cliffhanger at the end. All I can say is: More please Toni!! Here is a sample chapter to sink your teeth into: Out Of The Ashes

It is 2011 and Paromantasy has a bunch of fun things planned for you. I have been away from you for a while for reasons beyond my control, but I have been planning lots of cool stuff. I have a bunch of author interviews and reviews of books that have just knocked my winter boots off...Spring, please come quickly!! With reviews comes some great giveaways! Speaking of giveaways...I never publicly announced the winner of the VA Last Sacrifice giveaway. The winner was Layla! She has received her book and hopefully loved it! Hey Layla, if you are our there - let's hear your thoughts.  VA ended my year off with a bang, albeit not a huge one, but I cannot wait for the spin-off series, Bloodlines, coming this August. I'm going to post the last few reviews of the VA series (book 4 - 6) that I was missing and some news that I discovered on my quest for juicy tidbits about the spin off series! I also have a list of "Paromantasy's most anticipated 2011 releases" that goes through my must have books of this year.

Talk to you all later.
