Review of Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy Novel, Hexed by Rachel Wells

Title: Hexed
Series: Forever Charmed Series, book 2
Author: Rachel Wells

Official Synopsis
A mysterious old lady in a cemetery...

A fallen angel with one thing on her mind...

A vial of pure black magic in the wrong hands...

As if all of that wasn't stressful enough, Mandy's long time boyfriend is defnitely not acting like himself.

Mandy finds herself on the run as she tries to keep a vial of pure dark magic out of enemies' hands. It's not easy when you have a fallen angel hot on your trail and no one to turn to. Along the way, Mandy will discover new friends and enemies which lead to questions of commitments and her future...

Will she say yes?

My Review
I loved Enchanted and then Hexed came along and I fell in love with the characters all over again. This book takes Enchanted and amplifies it. There is more action, more suspense, more romance, more Supes...It is more of everything I love and I still can't get enough of this action packed series!

Mandy is back with her boyfriend in tow and after all they went through, they try to secure some sense of normalcy...well as normal as a witch can get. They decide to head out for a getaway, little did they know that their lives would be forever changed. A chance meeting with an old woman soon turns into a journey of danger, betrayal, mystery and heart-pumping action. Mandy soon finds that she has to fight alone to protect the ones she loves when her boyfriend is the target of evil doers, her grandmother doesn't believe her and a fallen angel is after her for magic so strong it could ruin the world if it falls into the wrong hands...like a fallen angel. With the world on her shoulders and the people she loves on the line, Mandy must risk it all to save the ones she loves and the world. Will she be able to pull it off or will evil prevail?

This book is an unputdowable thrill ride. It goes from heart-warming romance to heart-pumping action in 0-5 seconds and will have you racing through the pages to unfold the mysteries. The major cliffhanger has me on pins and needles - I cannot wait to read the next installment of this series.

This book is rated 5 fangs!

Review of Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance Novel, Enchanted by Rachel Wells

Title: Enchanted
Series: Forever Charmed, book 1
Author: Rachel Wells

Official Synopsis
Mandy is a quiet teenager who just wants to blend in with the crowd rather than stand out as anything or anybody. Mandy's pretty successful at this until her parents decide it's time to move from Boston to the quiet seaside town of York Beach, Maine, to "be closer to Nana". Although Mandy has been vacationing in York every summer since she was a child, she has no desire to live there and is worried about fitting in and finding friends during her senior year of high school.

Nana owns a flower shop in town and while working alongside her, Mandy makes a few friends and observes the oddities of the little town and its inhabitants. When she finds some old correspondance hidden inside an antique trunk handed down from her Nana, the "oddities" turn into full fledged mysteries. As she unravels the forgotten and hidden history of the town, she simultaneously unravels her own family's past and current secrets while writing her future. With bits of romance and paranormal along the way, she is able to figure out the puzzle of the correspondance, the magic she never realized was surrounding her, and visions of the past and future. Will she walk away from her personal history and her future or will she realize it's ok to be somebody, even if that somebody is nothing like everybody else?

My Review
If you like fun, mystery, action and romance, then you will love Enchanted! Get ready to go through an emotional roller coaster as we take this magical ride with Mandy as the pilot. You will laugh, cry, and cheer for Mandy as you race through the pages.

Mandy is an average girl who just wants to blend in. When her parents move her from Boston to Maine, she feel like life will end in this boring town. What she soon discovers is that nothing is as it seems in this little town, including her family. She soon realizes that she is anything but normal..she is a witch and her Nana is ready to teach her to use her hidden powers for good. Problem is, nothing stays hidden for long and soon her abilities are the talk of the town and someone wants that power for themselves. With everyone she loves in danger, it is up to Mandy to use her powers to stop the madman or it all...including her life.

This book is tons of fun, action, mystery, and laughs. It had me from the first page and had me waiting with bated breath for part 2, Hexed. Enchanted is a must read for all YA UF and Paranormal Romance fans!

Interview and Giveaway with Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Author of the Forever Charmed Series, Rachel Wells

Today we are shining the spotlight on a newly discovered author Rachel Wells. Her Forever Charmed series is a YA PNR/UF that had me racing through the pages and begging for more. The first book Enchanted, did exactly what the title suggested. It enchanted me from the very first page as we followed Mandy on her journey of magic, love, betrayal and action as she discovers that she is a witch and there are people who will do anything to possess power. The journey continues in part 2 of the series, Hexed. Here we see that the stakes are higher as Mandy is faced with the possibility of losing those she loves most. When a fallen angel gets a hold of a vial of dark magic, it is up to Mandy with her new powers, some old friends, and tons of magical creatures to bring the angel down before it is too late. This book is filled with more...more action, more romance, more magic. If you love magic, romance, fun and action, then the Forever Charmed series is for you!

Rachel Wells is here today to talk about this hot new series, how she became a writer and why she thinks young romance can work! BTW - I also married my highschool sweetheart, so I am totally agree with you :-)
Let's hear it for Rachel Wells!

Tell us about yourself.
I’m a wife and stay at home mother to three girls. I like to cook, bake, scrapbook, read, and write. Nothing too thrilling!

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? How did you start?
I was always writing stories as a kid. Probably because I always loved to read them and it was fun to me to make up my own. I always thought it would be really cool to write a book, but before you actually sit down to write one, it can seem like an almost impossible task. When I had the idea for Enchanted, I decided I was just going to do it. Even if I had to write it a little bit at a time, and I did.

Where did you get the idea for the Forever Charmed Series from?
I’ve always liked “weird” stuff, like paranormal and supernatural things. I vacation in York Beach, Maine, which is where the story takes place, and one summer I heard about a ghost tour there. When I looked into it I found out about Mary Nasson, the reputed witch. That caught my attention and I began to dig around on the internet for more information about her and the story just grew and developed from there.

I love the world of magic you created, especially the whole new world set forth in Hexed. Which supernatural being would you be if given the choice?
I think it would be awesome to be a psychic, especially an eccentric time traveling one like the Ophelia in my stories.

Which character is your favorite and why?
I love Mandy, probably because she is a lot like me. We share a lot of the same qualities, feelings, and tendencies, so I can really identify with her.

Which character are you most like?
Like I said, Mandy. :-)

Mandy and Steve maybe young, but they have a love that defies all odds. How did your first love match up?
It was similar actually. I met my now husband in high school, and we started out just as friends…however we ended up married at 19! Still together today. When you’re that young, I think a lot of people think you are crazy and expect you to fail, but that’s not always the case.

What authors and/or books have influenced you?
There’s so many books and authors that have influenced me in more than one way. I love the Twilight books, the actual story and Stephenie Meyer’s success with them. But I also love to read about Indie writers who have done well, such as Amanda Hocking or H.P. Mallory because it’s inspiring to me to know that success is possible.

What books are you currently reading?
I’m reading Jane Eyre. It’s a classic I had yet to read, and I’m really loving it!

Are you working on any other projects we should watch out for?
I’m working on the third book in the Forever Charmed series, Changed. It’s going to be the final one and so far to me, it seems to be the most magical of all three.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Finding time to write is a challenge when there are three kids running around. Writing Enchanted was more difficult because it was the first in the series, and when I started writing it I had a very vague idea of what I wanted it to be about. I knew the setting, I knew Mandy was in it, and I knew I wanted the reputed witch of York, Mary Nasson, to play into it. Other than that, I had no clue where I was going. So sometimes I would figure things out and write a lot, and sometimes I had no idea what to do so I wouldn’t write at all. Writing a book that way takes a lot of time. With Hexed, I decided to try a different route. I set a 2000 words a day goal. Each day I did my 2000 words, and I was done within six weeks. The story just rolled out of me. I don’t know if it’s because I was more familiar with the characters, or the guidelines I imposed for myself, but I’ve learned that I work better with a concrete goal in front of me.

What do you do when you are not writing?
Like I said, I’ve got three kids…so I do mom stuff. Cook, clean, bake, chauffeur kids to school, gymnastics, girl scouts, etc. I like to squeeze in some reading time for myself, or lose myself online for a while too.

Completely random question: What is your favorite TV show or Movie?
I really don’t watch a lot of stuff. I like a lot of outdated things…the American Pie movies, for example. Or my favorite movie as a teenager was Hocus Pocus. It’s so dumb but so funny at the same time. I still watch it every year around Halloween and I always laugh at it still. Sarah Jessica Parker was hilarious in it.

Tell the readers what to expect when reading one of your books.
I try to write about characters that can be related to. If you can connect with a character as far as who they are and what makes them tick, why they do what they do, etc., it just makes the story so much more believable and real feeling, even in something so far-fetched as a paranormal book. I want readers to be left with that sort of feeling like maybe there’s a possibility of magic in the real world after all.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Just that I hope they like what I write! It’s so mind boggling to know that I wrote a book and other people out there read what I wrote. It’s just a great feeling!

Thanks Rachel for stopping by! Rachel's Forever Charmed series is a mix of humor, action, romance, and danger all wrapped up with a magical punch. It will have you racing through the pages and guessing until the very end. And guess what...Rachel is giving away a copy!

To Read or Not to Read: Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill..what do you think?

Have you ever had a million things on your TBR list and find that there are a few you really want to read but just never get to it? That's my scenario with a few books/series. One in particular is Chicagoland Vampires. I've heard great and not-so-great things about it, but I thougt I would ask my fellow paromantasy addicts your opinion. Should I move it on up the list and get to it already, or is it one of those "read it when you have time" kind of books? Help a sista out..lol

Q&A and Giveaway with Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Author of Bound By Blood, PA Lupton

Today we are shining the spotlight on P.A Lupton, an urban fantasy and paranormal romance writer who made me an instant fan with her action-packed, witty, suspenseful and romance-laced novel, Bound by Blood (The Garner Witch Series). This book had me glued to the pages until the very last page. It follows Brianna, an FBI agent with a secret - she's psychic and uses her gift to help put criminals away. Soon she discovers there is alot more to her powers then just being psychic. As she tries to solve a string of murders, all female and all with a deadly aura that she cannot solve, she finds the answers and loses her heart to her number one suspect. This book is incredible!

PA Lupton has taken the time to come and chat with me about her book, her life as an author and our mutual love for all things chocolate!

Let's give it up for PA Lupton!

Hi Penny! Tell us about yourself.
Well, I’m a thirty(ish) Gemini. I’ve been happily married for fifteen years and I have two very mischievous boys.

How did you start your career as a writer?
Reading is an obsession for me. I love getting lost in books, especially anything paranormal. I’d been thinking about writing a novel for years but never started. Still, I’ve always been determined and I mentioned writing a book to my mother who said “There’s no way you can do it.” Well, that was it for me; I set out to prove her wrong. When I finished I took the completed manuscript to my mother with a smug smile and said “Ha, you said I couldn’t do it.” She laughed and said. “I knew that would work.” Funny thing is I started writing mostly to see if I could do it, but now I can’t turn it off—I love it too much.

Where did you get the idea for Bound by Blood from?
My ideas for the story came from my love of vampires and witches in general. I find both fascinating and I love reading about anything to do with witches or vampires. Still, I always find paranormal novels are usually about one or the other, I wanted to change that a make something unique that incorporated both.

I love your unique twist on vampires and witches. Which would you rather be if given the choice?
Definitely a witch. I don’t think I could drink blood.

Which character is your favorite and why?
This is hard to choose because I love my three main characters, but the story is about Brianna so she’s definitely my favorite.

Which character are you most like?
I’m a little OCD about my characters. When I come up with a character I search the internet until I have a picture that fits what I’ve imagined. Then I put the picture in a photo album along with a history for each one. I know their birthdays, back stories, accents, idiosyncrasies, and so many more minute details. Brianna though is the only character I didn’t do that for. I imagine myself in her shoes. Her thoughts and responses are all what I would think or say in a situation. Every other character I imagine how they would respond based on their character’s personality. So I would say Brianna is the most like me—aside from physic gifts and powers, of course.

Brianna has two hot guys in her life, Agent Morrison and Nathan. Can we expect to see lots more heart pumping action from these three? (I ask as I wait with bated breath)
Yes, the sequel to Bound by Blood will continue from Brianna’s perspective and will include tons of action with Morrison and Nathan.

What authors and/or books have influenced you?
My favorite authors right now are Jeaniene Frost and JR Ward. Anne Rice will always be a favorite for me, and she’s the one who made me fall in love with the Paranormal. Amanda Hocking is the one who inspired me to self-publish so I’d say she’s influenced me as well.

What books are you currently reading?
I read a book every day and I jump around from series to series. Right now I am finishing the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning, and I am eagerly awaiting the release of Drink Deep by Chloe Neill. I also plan on finishing the Archangels series by Nalini Singh who is a new author I’ve recently discovered that I absolutely love.

Are you working on any other projects we should watch out for?
I am finishing the sequel to Bound by Blood right now and I am hoping to have it released around Christmas this year (fingers crossed). I have another first of a series I’ve completed but I’m still tweaking it a little and I would like to have that out early next year.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
The absolute hardest part of writing the book is actually not the writing—that’s the easy part. The hardest part is to stop writing. I finished the book and I wanted to keep going back and changing things. I kept feeling like I could make it better. Finally I had to decide it was enough.

What do you do when you are not writing?
I spend the majority of my time with my kids. They are into a lot of sports and it takes up a ton of time. When I can relax you will usually find me with a book in my hand or writing.

Completely random question: What food or dessert could you not live without?
I could live without anything but chocolate. I would be a very happy person if someone invented a calorie free, fat free chocolate bar that tastes exactly the same.

If you could be any supernatural being or possess any power, what would it be?
This answer changes from day to day, but I think I would love the power of teleportation. I’d love to teleport to Mexico just because I want a burrito, or Switzerland when I feel like chocolate.

Tell the readers what to expect when reading one of your books.
There are a few things I love when reading a book and those are must haves for me when writing mine. There has to be a strong, kick butt heroine who is independent and self sufficient. I like Urban Fantasy, but I have to have romance as well. Of course a strong, gorgeous Alpha hero is essential. Still, even though he’s strong I love when the main characters are equals—I am not a fan of the damsel in distress storyline.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
First I’d really like to thank you for reviewing Bound by Blood and having me on your blog. I’d also like to thank everyone whose read the book and taken the time to give me such positive feedback. I’ve had people email me to tell me how much they loved the story, and knowing how much enjoyment I get from the books I love, it is such a wonderful experience to know I brought that to someone else.

PA Lupton is an amazing author and such a wonderful, sweet person - I think it's the chocolate. I'm a chocolate lover myself and we tend to be the greatest people alive :-) Bound by Blood is an amazing thrill ride that will grip you from the first page and keep you glued to the page until the very end, and guess what??? It can be yours!

Guest Post, Excerpt and International Givieaway by Paranormal Romance Author Felicity Heaton for her new book, HEART OF DARKNESS

Heart of Darkness – Setting the mood with cover artIt’s wonderful to be back here at Paromantasy. This time I’m here as part of my HEART OF DARKNESS book blog tour and today I’ll be talking about the cover art for this long vampire romance novel.

In case you’re not familiar with me, here’s a quick introduction. My name is Felicity Heaton and I write under that name and also as F E Heaton. I’m a paranormal romance author and I’ve been writing since 2005, and turned indie in 2006. In that time I have written over forty stories, including my best selling Her Angel series and my popular Vampires Realm series (which I write as F E Heaton). My paranormal romances are usually focused on vampires and werewolves, but I do also write other shape-shifters like black panthers, and also demons and witches, and a whole bunch of sexy angels.

It’s quite well known that I create my own cover art for my books as I have a degree in Graphic Design and have been working with PhotoShop for around half of my life. Because I create my own cover art, it means I get to produce something that really speaks about the book and can source images that match my vision of the characters. It’s not easy to produce a successful cover and takes hours of work, most of which is spent tracking down the right image that will work with the idea I have in my head.

With the cover of Heart of Darkness, I traipsed through hundreds of pictures searching for the right one that really spoke to me. I wanted to give the reader an immediate impression that it was a dark paranormal romance book but also that it wasn’t your typical one. In Heart of Darkness, the hero Aleksandr has to really work to win the heroine Elise. He starts his pursuit of her in completely the wrong way because he has been away from society for four centuries tracking vampire hunters in his mission to avenge his murdered sister. Everything has changed in his time away from the vampire world and so he tries to chase Elise in a way he would have four hundred years ago. Let’s just say that approach doesn’t go well for him. I wanted to show his fight for her and the fact that Elise definitely makes him work, and makes him change, in order to win her heart. A typical romantic clinch picture we see on plenty of romance covers wouldn’t have worked for Heart of Darkness.

The picture I chose, with the woman turned away from the man, conveyed the battle Aleksandr has to wage with Elise to win her but there’s also more going on in that picture that spoke to me. The fact that the heroine is still in his arms, as though she’s torn between remaining and running was so very like Elise. The man too was perfect for Aleksandr, who does change his ways in the story, opening his heart to Elise and laying everything on the line so she will be his at last. The quiet affection in the pose reflected the tenderness that Aleksandr shows towards Elise and the care he takes with her, but also made me feel that he fiercely needs the woman he’s holding and that was Aleksandr to a T.

The colouring and font choices on the cover are always of utmost importance. I wanted those to really convey the struggle in the book, not just between the heroine and hero, but between the hero and the darkness growing within him that threatens to destroy him. I chose to make the cover fade up from black and white and have the area behind the text dark. I also chose two fonts that went well together, using one that said romantic and love, and another that really screamed darkness and danger.

It isn’t my most elaborate cover but it is one that many readers and reviewers have commented on because it intrigued them and made them want to venture into the story to find out why the hero and heroine are so at odds on the cover, and that makes it a successful one to me.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this insight into how I designed the cover for Heart of Darkness, my new vampire romance novel. If you’d like to know more about the book, I’ve included a blurb, links to an excerpt, and buy links below. You can also follow me on my Heart of Darkness blog tour. The dates are listed at my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour page at my website: http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk/paranormal-pandemonium-blog-tour.php

Felicity Heaton is a romance author writing as both Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton. She is passionate about penning paranormal tales full of vampires, witches, werewolves, angels and shape-shifters, and has been interested in all things preternatural and fantastical since she was just a child. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

Review of Urban Fantasy Moganvile Vampire novel, Last Breath by Rachel Caine

Title: Last Breath
Series: The Morganville Vampires, book 11
Author: Rachel Caine

Official Synopsis
With her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace. She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone new to town-a mysterious individual named Magnus. After an uneasy encounter with Morganville's latest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn't merely human. But is he a vampire-or something else entirely?

My Review
Last Breath is even better than the first installment of the series! After eleven books, Rachel Caine is still on fire, keeping the action coming, the twists and turns rolling and the hints of romance growing. This book, more than the others in the series, truly left me reeling with tons of surprises and incredible action and emotional turmoil that had me laughing, crying, cheering and angry as I devoured the pages.

Claire and the gang are back and as usual, they find themselves in the middle of a war that leaves vampires running, humans hiding, and Morganville at the brink of collapse. Michael and Eve's wedding are causing disarray with humans and vampires alike, but that gets pushed aside when Morganville gets an unwanted visitor. With vampires disappearing, and Claire seeing an ominous figure lurking in the shadows, she starts doing what she does best - investigating and trying to protect the people she loves, vampires and humans alike. Problem is, this figure, Magnus, is unlike any other being she has ever met - a creature that leaves even the vampires quaking with fear. As she tries to help her friends. As everything collapses around her, will Claire be able to save the town and the people she has grown to love before it's too late, or will she lose it all?

This book is the eleventh book in the series, yet it still managed to surprise me - that is incredible. A major character (or should I say characters?) is killed off, people are left in grief, the town in chaos and the vampires on the run. In other words, the proverbial crap has hit the fan and it will leave you reeling. The subtle yet powerful ending will leave counting down the days for the next book! I can't wait to see what happens next!

Rachel Caine - you are a genius!

Review of Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy Novel, Great Hexpectations by HP Mallory

Title: Great Hexpectations
Series: Dulcie O'Neil, book 3
Author: HP Mallory

Official Synopsis
Great Hexpectations:
A misunderstanding turned deadly.

And a partner who would put his own life on the line to defend hers.
Dulcie O'Neil knows she's at fault for failing to arrest a wanted criminal but when her partner gets pinned for the crime, she'll stop at nothing to ensure his innocence.
What Dulcie isn't planning on is a trip to the infamous Netherworld where chaos rules.
Between battling the affections of a mysterious vampire, protecting herself from monsters and ensuring the innocence of the one man who would die for her, Dulcie's trip to the Netherworld isn't sunshine and strawberry daiquiris.

My Review
This book in 3 words: Suspenseful, Mind-Blowing, Kick-Ass. Everyone knows I am a huge HP Mallory fan and I had Great Hexpectations for this book (cue laughs), and HP did not disappoint. Everything she touches is magic and each installment of this series just keep getting better and better!

Our favorite fairy is back and if she thought her life was complicated before, she better think again cause it's about to go on overdrive. She finally let's down her guard to her delicious Loki and former partner Knight, but just when things are heating up - he disappears. She soon learns that the past never stays behind for long. He has been taken to the Netherworld prison for a crime she committed. Knight is set on saving her from
her past mistakes, but we all know Dulcie is not going to let that happen. With her sexy vampire frienemy at hand, they set out to the Underworld to help Knight and what she discovers is shocking!

This book is incredible, un-put-downable, and leaves you screaming for more. It's filled with romance, suspense, laughter and twists and turns that had me crying, laughing, cheering and screaming as I journeyed through the Netherworld with Dulcie, Bram, Knight and some other new characters that you are going to love getting to know! HP Mallory - you are a genius!! BTW - the shocker ending had me pulling my hair out! I can't wait to find out what happens!

This book is rated 5 Fangs!!

Question of the Day:
Would you let someone you love take the fall for you?

I can say that I couldn't. I'm too much of a softy to do that to the people that I love. Now, if it is someone I can't stand, all they'll be hearing from me is "haha! have fun in the slammer!"..lol. What would you do?
